New Windsor Hazard Mitigation Plan

New Windsor Hazard Mitigation Plan
The Turner Miller Group was Retained in 2008 by the Town of New Windsor, New York to prepare a Hazard Mitigation Plan to address the mitigation of potential natural hazards, including flood, snow, wind, fire, and geologic hazards in the Town. The Plan was prepared in conjunction with a Town appointed Local Planning Team (LPT).
The Town of New Windsor is located along the Hudson River, approximately 60 miles north of New York City in Orange County, New York. With a population of approximately 25,000 residents, New Windsor is primarily a bedroom community with prominent historical significance.
The Plan’s main components include:
·          Hazard Identification – A description and prioritization of the natural hazards that have occurred or have the potential to occur within the Town of New Windsor was developed.
·          Hazard Mapping – A basemap was developed of areas of the Town that have been affected by or have the potential to be affected by natural hazards.
·          Vulnerability Assessment – An overview of the Town’s vulnerability to specific hazards is being developed.

The Plan includes an implementation schedule and mechanisms to monitor, evaluate, and update the plan every 5 years. The recommendations of the Plan have been successfully incorporated into existing Town planning documents and procedures and allow for continued public involvement over time.
